What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Usually, you know when a dental situation is an emergency because you’ll feel it. While there are many different dental emergencies, here are the most common ones that we get in our office.

  • Knocked out teeth

  • Extreme toothache

  • Broken or chipped teeth

  • Swelling

  • Abscesses

  • Lost crowns and fillings

  • Trauma to the teeth or gums

  • Infections

If you’re dealing with an issue and you’re not sure if it’s an emergency, our team of dental professionals will help you determine whether you need emergency care or if you can do something to wait until a normal appointment is possible.

Same-Day Emergency Dental Care in Gonzales

Dental emergencies can often be extremely stressful, and you might wonder if you can even get help in a reasonable timeframe. After all, some offices just can’t get you in without a weeklong wait or longer.

At Moses Family Dentistry, we understand your pain and the severity of your emergency, and you can get same-day or next-day care. Even if you don’t have an appointment and simply call us up, we prioritize emergency cases to ensure our patients don’t have to suffer.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

When you have a dental emergency, it’s important to react quickly and properly.

First, make sure you contact our office as soon as you can. Regardless of the emergency, we can provide better guidance with a one-on-one phone call and cover every possibility here.

If your tooth has been knocked out, find the tooth, do not touch the root, and clean it with milk before trying to reinsert it. If you can reinsert it, bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place and get to our office. If you cannot insert it, place the tooth in milk or saline, and keep it there to preserve it.

Never wash the root, and try not to touch it. Washing the root can damage it, and you won’t be able to save it. Likewise, water seems okay to store it in, but water will actually destroy the root. Milk or saline is the best option that is likely in your home, but there are also commercially available solutions specifically for this situation. If you have one, use it.

For swelling, it’s best not to take medication unless you call first, because we might need to use something when you get here, and we don’t want any reactions to occur. Use an ice pack wrapped in paper towels and apply it to the side of your face. If you’re going to get next-day service, over-the-counter pain relievers can be an option, and most of them provide inflammation relief.

Whatever you do, avoid touching the affected area, do not try to remove any fragments on your own, and avoid things that might cause infections and irritation, such as smoking, drinking, or eating certain foods. In most situations, it’s best not to eat until you receive care, because you don’t want to get food in the wound or tooth cavity.

With situations such as abscesses and infections, there isn’t much you can do, but ice packs, salt water, and similar solutions can alleviate the pain until we handle the problem properly.

The best tip we have is to call immediately. After learning about your specific situation, we can provide better guidance for you to follow immediately, and we can start the process to get you in for professional help.
